"Coming Through the Rye", oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated 1867, Vieille Mfr de Couleurs de Paris stencil verso, titled on label verso from Driscoll Babcock Gallery of New York, housed in a gilt oak panel frame by Gill & Lagodich. OS: 25" x 20", SS: 16 1/4" x 11 1/4". Stretcher size: 16 3/4" x 11 3/4". Condition: Excellent, stable, intact and clean. Old hot wax relining recently removed. Cleaning and conservation performed by David Bull at Fine Art Conservation, 17 East 76th St. New York. Catalogue Raisonne #305.



Provenance: The Artist, Paris and New York, 1867-1873: Edward Brown, New York, 1878 (probably): J.F. Harral, Aurora, Illinois, until 1944; Private Collection, acquired from the above, 1944; Thence by Descent, Private Collection, Chicago, Illinois, until 2017.

    Montmartre Paris Cul-de-Sac, oil on canvas, signed lower right, in a fatigued gold carved frame with linen liner, OS: 23 1/2" x 20 1/2", SS: 15 3/4" x 12 3/4". Fine overall craquelure. Born in Montmartre, the son of Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938), a model and painter; School of Paris, proponent of naive cityscapes rendered in thick impasto, Utrillo unknowingly recorded a disappearing more provincial suburb of Paris, the habitual home of artists.

    Small painting of the America's Cup Race, oil on cardstock laid to academy board, depicting the last two competing yachts blasting past the Judge's Boat, the Nantucket Light Ship, a white hulled steamer and a multitude of sailboats behind, housed in an ornate gilt deep cove gesso frame, OS: 17 1/2" x 21 1/2", SS: 7 1/4" x 11 1/4". Fine condition. Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, moving to West Hoboken, New Jersey when he was 23, where he cultivated clientele among ship captains by painting their ships on safes. He was the most prolific of maritime artists, creating more than 6,000 works, many priced at only $5, earning him the nickname of the "Audubon of Steam Vessels".

"Olsen's", watercolor/gouache on half sheet of cotton rag paper, circa 1965, his name and title in pencil on backing board, consigned by a family friend, depicting the Cushing, Maine farmhouse made famous by his father's widely reproduced "Christina's World", a work of 1948. The son's version from another view, housed in a light wood frame. This piece done in the artist's youth, c. age 19, already demonstrating great skill and vision. Signed, matted and glazed, OS: 31 3/4" x 28 3/4", SS: 14" x 21 1/2", fine condition.
