Auction Waves: Thomaston Place Auction Galleries Inaugurates Podcast Series

We visit Chris Timm of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath for an in-depth exploration of the nautical paths that carried rare and unusual Japanese artifacts, artworks, furnishings and collectibles from Japan to the coast of Maine in the mid-to-late 19th Century.

A words'-eye view of the local auction scene hits popular podcast platforms this month as Thomaston Place Auction Galleries in Thomaston introduces "Auction Waves," an ongoing series of audio presentations highlighting the history and the lore of the many items crossing the auction block. The program is produced and hosted by radio veteran and popular-culture historian Elizabeth McLeod of Rockland, who will delve behind the bid lists to explore the deep and fascinating heritage of the many rare and unusual items passing under the hammer.

The series begins with two releases spotlighting the house's May 2nd auction of Japanese Art and Antiques. In the first program, McLeod will interview Chris Timm, executive director of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, for an in-depth overview of how so many fascinating Japanese artifacts found their way halfway around the world to 19th and early 20th Century Maine. In the second release, McLeod sits down with Massachusetts-based expert David Kutcher for a lively examination of the art and history of Japanese Woodblock Prints, including a detailed analysis of the works of Kawase Hasui and an exquisite Kawase Hasui "Tokaido Nissaka" Print, Lot #1164 on offer.

Future releases in the series will profile important estates and private collections to be featured in upcoming auctions, along with inside looks at the behind-the-scenes process of putting together each new auction.

Elizabeth McLeod brings forty years experience in radio production and presentation to "Auction Waves," along with a deep understanding and appreciation for mass culture of the past hundred and fifty years. She has written and published extensively about the history of American broadcasting, and has appeared as an expert in television documentary series ranging from "History Detectives" to "American Masters." "History is one of my passions," she says, "and storytelling is another. I'm looking forward to both the challenge and the fun we'll have in learning the stories behind the many fascinating objects that pass through the gallery."
